Nearly one in five Australians have arthritis. By 2050, it is estimated that there will be seven million Australians with arthritis. Arthritis is Australia's major cause of disability and pain.
If you, or someone you know, has arthritis, there are some effective natural medicines that can help manage the day-to-day symptoms, as well as helping to restore joint health in the long term.
|
|

Some pharmaceutical treatments for osteoarthritis may have unpleasant side effects, so many people are seeking natural alternatives to help them manage their arthritis. The most effective of these are glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate and omega-3 essential fatty acids. There has been a lot of scientific research done on these natural medicines, proving their value in the management of arthritis. In this newsletter we will be looking at the benefits of omega-3 essential fatty acids for arthritis. |
|

|
Omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) are fats that you need. They are called “essential” because the body cannot manufacture them and, therefore, they must be obtained through the diet or supplementation. These EFAs are required for healthy brain function, vision, co-ordination and mood. They also support the cardiovascular, reproductive, immune, and nervous systems, as well as helping to reduce inflammation. These omega-3 EFAs are highly deficient in most people’s diet and are absolutely critical to your health – especially if you have arthritis. The best source of these omega-3 EFAs is fish.

Ethical Nutrients has made taking 2.7 grams of omega-3 (EPA/DHA) every day easy!
Just one standard metric teaspoon (5mL) of great tasting Ethical Nutrients Hi-Strength Liquid Fish Oil provides 2.7 grams of omega-3 (EPA/DHA).
This is the required dose for arthritis in just one teaspoon, once a day!
Each 4.6g (one teaspoon) serve of highly concentrated fish oil provides 2.7 grams of omega-3 (1.9 g EPA and 927 mg DHA). A standard 1000 mg fish oil capsule provides just 0.3 g of EPA/DHA.
|
|

| Although fish is a good source of omega-3 you would have to eat 1.23 kg of snapper, or 1.1 kg of canned tuna everyday to get the recommended dose of omega-3 (EPA/DHA). Food is usually preferable to supplements, but in the case of fish oil, capsule or liquid form may be a better source of EFA's than fish because fish oil is purified. This ensures that the fish oil is free of mercury and other toxins. Current Australian regulatory standards require that fish oils are cleaned and screened for toxins and heavy metals, ensuring that mercury and other toxins are only present in very low levels. At Ethical Nutrients we have taken this standard and raised the bar. Our fish oils are cleaned by molecular distillation to a higher level than the Australian standard, making our fish oils among the cleanest EFA supplements available today. |

Fish oils can help reduce joint inflammation, joint swelling and increase joint mobility associated with arthritis, but to get a therapeutic effect from most fish oil capsules you need to take 9 standard fish oil capsules every day! As well as the purity, another major benefit of taking Ethical Nutrients Hi-Strength Liquid Fish Oil is the dosage. Our liquid is concentrated so you only need to take 1 teaspoon of liquid once daily, to get the full therapeutic dose and help ease your joint pain.
Ethical Nutrients Hi-Strength Liquid Fish Oil does taste great, but if you would prefer a caspule you can take 6 capsules of Ethical Nutrients Hi-Strength Fish Oil Capsules instead of 9 standard fish oil capsules for arthritis.

As well as Ethical Nutrients Hi-Strength Fish Oil, dietary and lifestyle changes may also assist in the management of arthritis; so remember to…
- Eat a diet rich in nutritious whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean protein, and essential fatty acids from cold-water fish, nuts and seeds.
- Eliminate potentially inflammatory foods (e.g. foods made from refined grains, such as white breads and pastas, sugar, saturated fats, alcohol and caffeine).
- Eliminate any foods you are allergic or sensitive to from your diet as these may exacerbate your osteoarthritis.
- Keep moving! Low impact, gentle exercise is essential for management of osteoarthritis. If you don’t keep the joints moving, they can gradually become less and less flexible.
- Some natural therapies, such as acupuncture, massage, physiotherapy, cranio-sacral therapy and/or Bowen therapy, have been shown to assist with management of symptoms of osteoarthritis.
In next month's newsletter we will look at the benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin in treating arthritis. |
